Place & story

Land for a church

The Church of the Assumption at Sandpit dates from around 1846. A diocesan historical account cites the Drogheda Argus of 6 December 1845, which reported that Henry Chester had given parish priest Callan an acre of land free of rent for a church site. The surviving record places Sandpit’s building project within the wider expansion of Catholic churches in the Armagh diocese during the 1840s. [2] [3]

The tower completed later

The church’s architectural history did not end with its initial construction. The Dictionary of Irish Architects records the completion of its tower in 1911 by William Henry Byrne and Son. It also records an attribution of the earlier church to John Murray, rather than a firmly documented commission. The distinction between the mid-nineteenth-century building and its later tower shows how the village landmark developed in stages. [3]

From the old school to the 1956 building

Sandpit National School moved to its present location in 1956 from an older building a short distance along the road. The school’s own history traces that earlier site to the 1830s. It recalls growth from two teachers to three in the early 1980s, followed by further expansion during the 1990s and 2000s. Four extensions since 1995 recorded the increasing accommodation required, continuing an educational presence that began before the present church was built. [4]
