Behind the atlas

Sources & attribution

The atlas depends on public reference works, open data and the people who record Ireland’s names and landscapes.

Logainm

Irish-language placename data by Logainm © Government of Ireland and licensed under CC BY 4.0. Place names are obtained through the Logainm API. Source records are linked from individual pages.

The open-data licence does not cover Logainm explanatory notes, collected historical citations or linked media. Those materials are not republished here under the API licence.

OpenStreetMap

Interactive map tiles and county atlas boundaries use OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database Licence. Townlands.ie provides downloaded Irish boundary data. Townland boundary records may instead use Tailte Éireann data under CC BY 4.0 or Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland data under the Open Government Licence 3.0; the downloadable geometry identifies its source and licence.

Place pages automatically load interactive map tiles from OpenStreetMap. Map boundaries describe the supplied dataset and should not be treated as a legal determination.

Historical and census sources

Original editorial includes sources alongside the relevant place. Historical interpretations remain attributed to their authors. Copyright and licence status vary between works.

Where census summaries appear, they identify the year and link to the available record context. The original census return is the source to check for genealogical research.
