Place & story
A place recorded by an estate survey
The National Library of Ireland catalogues an 1812 survey by John Longfield of Killickabawn showing Willow Grove and Godswell. The map concerns part of the Honourable Robert Leeson’s estate in Newcastle barony. Its title provides a dated documentary reference to Willow Grove, without establishing when the settlement or its name first originated. [2]
The village public house
A January 2002 local newspaper report described an application to demolish the Grove Bar, its residence and outbuildings, and replace them with a licensed building. It recalled that Collie Devereux had run the pub for many years before its sale in the late 1990s. The report documents a proposed redevelopment, rather than proof that the scheme was built. [3]
