Place & story
The bridge and the handball alley
Milltown’s limestone bridge spans the River Clare, joining the two sides of the village. The local heritage trail dates it to 1856 and identifies its construction with a relief scheme. Beside the approach stand the remains of a three-walled handball alley from the early twentieth century. The pairing brings transport and recreation into the same small riverside space: one structure carried everyday movement through the settlement, while the other provided a place for local sport and sociability.[2]

A new star observed from Millbrook
John Birmingham conducted astronomical observations from nearby Millbrook. In a letter dated 22 May 1866, he published a reply from William Huggins at Tulse Hill Observatory acknowledging news of a newly observed star. Huggins had examined its spectrum and sent a paper to the Royal Society. Birmingham added that the star was fading and could no longer be seen without a telescope. The contemporary correspondence shows a rural Galway observer exchanging evidence with a leading investigator of stellar light.[3]
The station at Pollaturick
Milltown’s former railway station at Pollaturick survives as a group of buildings rather than just a station house. The architectural inventory describes a stationmaster’s residence at right angles to the platform, with an attached station building and a shelter supported by cast-iron columns. Limestone slabs pave the platform. A goods shed and signal box complete the railway setting, the latter combining a stone-like concrete base with broad windows above. The complex preserves the varied functions required at a small rural station.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
