Place & story

A purpose-built racecourse

Captain George Quin developed Leopardstown Racecourse in 1888, taking Sandown in England as a model. Horse Racing Ireland’s historical account describes a purpose-built course rather than an older informal racing ground. The oval, left-handed circuit became a venue for both Flat racing and jumping, giving Leopardstown a sporting identity that extended well beyond the surrounding district. [2]

Reopening in 1971

An RTÉ report broadcast on 10 January 1971 records preparations to reopen Leopardstown after a million-pound refurbishment. Manager Alex Bergl presented the investment as a change in the experience offered to racegoers. The improvements included a heated stand, additional bars, and better catering and betting facilities. Reporter Mícheál Ó Briain’s account captures the racecourse at a particular stage of its expansion. [3]

People & connections

Gertrude Dunning’s gift

In 1917 Gertrude Dunning gave Leopardstown Park house and its hundred-acre grounds for the care of disabled former members of the British forces. The hospital’s own history records its initial specialism in treating soldiers affected by shell shock and its subsequent provision of wider medical and surgical services. The neighbouring racecourse and hospital therefore developed markedly different public roles on their respective estates. [4]

Opening care to a wider public

The hospital’s original trust restricted the people it could receive. A private Act of the Oireachtas in 1974 amended those arrangements to allow the trustees to admit a broader range of patients. Its preamble records that the number eligible under the earlier terms had declined. The hospital’s history places the admission of non-military residents in the 1970s and the transfer of management to a hospital board in 1979. [5] [4]
