Place & story
Slate reused for the church
Chapeltown's church is dedicated to Saints Darerca and Teresa. Its building history connects it with Valentia's slate industry: the World Heritage Project's feasibility report records that walls of the former squaring house at the slate yard were dismantled to supply stone for the church in 1939. This was a physical reuse of industrial material in a building serving the island community. [2] [3]
Three schools brought together
Scoil Náisiúnta Dar Earca at nearby Ballyhearney was established in 1978 by merging three island schools. A 2026 RTÉ report documented its campaign for recognition as an island school despite Valentia's bridge connection to the mainland. The school's history illustrates the consolidation of educational provision for the island, while that later campaign shows the continuing importance of how an island community is defined. [4]
Football returns to O’Connor Park
Chapeltown's O'Connor Park is the home ground of Valentia Young Islanders, founded in 1905. In February 2023 the club resumed adult league football after being unable to field a team for two years. A GAA interview with chairperson Andrew Quigley described the return against Sneem/Derrynane and support from neighbouring clubs during the interruption. The occasion connected the ground's sporting history with the practical challenges of sustaining an island team. [5]
