Place & story

A stronghold at the narrows

Research published by Newry and Mourne Museum connects the sixteenth-century tower house with Captain John Sankey and the expansion of English government influence around Newry. Sankey received a grant of the castle in 1570, but it was cancelled in 1575. Sir Hugh Magennis held the building by 1580. The tower’s position beside the estuary gave control over an important approach to the town. [2]

Defence and later ownership

The museum describes three floors, a barrel-vaulted first floor and an entrance protected by a murder hole and projecting defensive stonework. The surrounding bawn enclosed smaller buildings. Following confiscation during the Cromwellian period, Joseph Deane held the property and sold it to Francis Hall in 1670. Later industrial use and restoration preceded state care in 1956. [2]

The nineteenth-century castle

The larger country house inland is a separate building. The Historic Buildings Record attributes its design to Newry architect Thomas Duff, employed by Roger Hall in the early 1830s. It records completion in 1837 and the conversion of the older Mount Hall house into servants’ accommodation. These dates differ from some estate accounts; they are the chronology given by the official building survey. [3]

Architecture and the demesne

The mansion’s Tudor Revival design uses granite fronts, clustered chimneys, numerous gables and ornamental pinnacles. Heraldic decoration includes the arms of Roger Hall and Barbara Savage. The official record places the house within a larger estate group containing stables, a walled garden, a gardener’s house and an icehouse. Its approach winds through landscaped ground before revealing the principal fronts above the driveway. [3]
