Place & story

Four arches for an unfinished railway plan

The Ballinderry Road bridge carries the road obliquely over the railway in Knockmore townland. Built early in the twentieth century, it replaced a level crossing and provided four brick arches on stone abutments. The official building survey connects this generous provision with the Great Northern Railway’s plans for additional tracks. Those plans were only partly realised, leaving one outer arch without a railway beneath it. [2]

The junction at work in 1976

Albert Bridge photographed Knockmore Junction on 14 August 1976. His accompanying account identifies the conductor of the Antrim–Lisburn service preparing to hand a single-line tablet to the signalman. The photograph records the working arrangements of a rural junction shortly before its closure in 1977, when the Antrim line was extended separately into Lisburn station. It preserves a particular operating moment as the railway layout was about to change. [3]

Factories for displaced businesses

A parliamentary answer in May 1975 described another change in Knockmore’s economy. Minister Stanley Orme reported twenty thousand square metres of multipurpose industrial buildings, with another eight thousand under construction. The estate’s purpose was to accommodate firms displaced by civil disturbance or redevelopment. Seven tenants then occupied about half the existing space. The answer records a specific stage in the development of industrial premises on Lisburn’s outskirts. [4]
