Place & story

The round tower

Drumbo's surviving round tower stands in the grounds of the Presbyterian church, on a site previously occupied by a medieval parish church and an earlier monastery. Lisburn Museum dates the tower to the early Christian period and records a surviving height of more than thirty-five feet. The tower and graveyard form the historic centre of a village that later expanded along the surrounding ridge. [2] [3]

The Presbyterian congregation

The Presbyterian congregation traces its history to Henry Livingstone's ministry, beginning in 1655. Later meeting houses served the community before the present church was built in 1882 during James McNeill's ministry. The congregation's recorded history also documents subsequent extensions to the church and school hall. These changes maintained an active institutional presence beside the much older monastic remains. [4]

The national school

Local subscriptions funded Drumbo's national schoolhouse in 1836. An application for recognition in 1840 described a single stone-and-lime classroom with a slate roof, desks and a parents' committee. After an inspector's visit, the National Board adopted the school in September 1840 and provided support for the teacher and textbooks. Chris Reid's school history reproduces the documents behind this transition into the national system. [5]
