Place & story
A school tradition from 1849
Drummin had a school from 1849, with its later building dating from 1936. The school’s own account records subsequent renovations, an additional classroom and grounds including a vegetable garden. In June 2026, the local parish newsletter announced that Drummin National School had closed after 177 years of primary education. The notice thanked generations of teachers, pupils, parents, staff and boards of management, marking the end of a long-standing village institution. [2] [3]
A thatched house in Drummin East
A thatched cottage in Drummin East preserves a form of rural house characteristic of south Mayo. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records its low, single-storey plan, thick fieldstone walls and alignment at right angles to the road. Opposing doors lead into a house whose kitchen retains a timber chimneypiece. The renewed thatch and replacement fittings show that the building has been maintained and adapted, rather than surviving entirely unchanged. [4]
Myles McKeon, bishop in Bunbury
Myles McKeon was born in Drummin in 1919 and studied at All Hallows College in Dublin before serving in Western Australia. He became auxiliary bishop of Perth in 1962 and attended the Second Vatican Council. Appointed bishop of Bunbury in 1969, he later recalled that his rural upbringing in western Ireland helped him feel at ease with country communities there. Bunbury Diocese’s obituary records his support for rural families, youth facilities and the establishment of Centrecare. [5]
