Place & story
Cill Rialaig Arts Centre
Cill Rialaig Arts Centre was built in Dungeagan in 1995. Its exhibitions and workshops provide a public meeting point for the wider Cill Rialaig project. Artists who stay at the separate retreat on Bolus Head contribute work for sale at the centre, helping support the project while bringing their work into village life. [2]
Rounds at Saint Michael’s Well
Writing after a visit in April 2018, Patrick Comerford describes a pilgrimage tradition at Saint Michael’s Well in Dungeagan. Pilgrims made repeated rounds while praying the Rosary, counted the rounds with small stones and left offerings such as pins, coins or cloth. He records that the water was believed to have miraculous powers in the eighteenth century, and associates the gathering with Michaelmas, 29 September. [3]
