Place & story

A nineteenth-century service centre

Tomás Ó Flatharta’s study for Galway County Heritage Office records a courthouse and dispensary, constabulary barracks, national school and Catholic chapel in the 1855 valuation. These stood among houses, yards and gardens, alongside a separately recorded Church of Ireland building. [2]

Village households in 1901

The same study identifies fifteen premises in Clonbur village in 1901: five dwellings, three shops, four public houses, two schools and a courthouse. Among its residents were teachers, shopkeepers, publicans, farm workers and a police district inspector. The McNally household is particularly associated with education: Bridget was a retired national teacher, while her daughters Mary Anne and Delia also taught. [2]

All Saints’

The former All Saints’ Church, recorded by the architectural inventory as a heritage centre, was built in 1846. Its limestone walls, buttresses and bellcote give the small single-cell building a distinctive outline. The inventory’s 2008 survey documented restoration following a period of dereliction. [3]
