Place & story
The church above the beach
Saint Deirbhle's ruined church stands on a knoll above a sandy beach within an old graveyard. The local heritage centre identifies eleventh- and twelfth-century phases in its construction: large granite blocks characterise the western masonry, while the eastern gable uses more regular courses. The centre also records a protective belief associated with the church window, according to which passing through it three times would prevent drowning. [2]
The holy well and its traditions
The nearby spring-fed holy well is another focus of devotion to Deirbhle. Ionad Deirbhle records pilgrimage around 15 August and a ritual of nine circuits of the well, some performed kneeling. It also preserves the belief that the water benefits eye complaints, linked to a story of the saint recovering her sight there. These are recorded religious traditions, rather than medical claims about the water. [3]
Deirbhle’s Twist
Michael Bulfin's Deirbhle's Twist overlooks Blacksod Pier. For this modern artwork, the sculptor raised granite boulders already present at the site and arranged them into a rising spiral. The Tír Sáile project identifies the local saint's story as its inspiration, alongside references to ancient stone monuments and atomic physics. The work belongs to the North Mayo Sculpture Trail, which began in 1993. [4] [5]
