Place & story
Two churches within an older enclosure
Fenagh's two medieval churches stand about 130 metres apart within a much larger ecclesiastical landscape. Heritage Ireland considers both likely to date from around the fifteenth century, one serving the monastery and the other the parish. The surrounding graveyard, enclosure and earthworks are essential parts of the site. This distinguishes the surviving masonry from the much earlier foundation associated with Saint Caillín. [2]
A manuscript asserting monastic claims
The Book of Fenagh was compiled in 1516 by scholar Muirghes mac Páidín Uí Maoil-Chonaire for Tadhg Ua Rodaighe, the contemporary head of Fenagh. The Irish Manuscripts Commission describes its purpose as setting out the monastery's claimed dues and privileges using earlier material. The manuscript is therefore evidence of how Fenagh represented its authority, as well as a source for its saint's traditions and regional history. [3]
Saint Catherine’s restoration
The later Saint Catherine's Church received financial support from the Board of First Fruits. Its nave and bellcote-topped porch preserve a Georgian church form, while James Bell's later chancel introduced a more elaborate Gothic east window. The church closed in 1974. Restoration began in 1988, conserving monuments and stained glass associated particularly with the Beresford family and returning attention to a building that had fallen into disrepair. [4]
