Place & story

Saving the Main Street terrace

The terrace at 7–10 Main Street climbs towards the former site of a stone corn mill. Number 10 once contained a public house, with drink stored in an alley beneath part of the neighbouring dwelling. By the 1980s most of the terrace was empty and deteriorating. Hearth Historic Buildings Trust restored numbers 8–10 in 1992–93, combining three houses into two while preserving the street frontage, whitewashed walls and green-painted woodwork. [2]

The church above the glen

Raloo Parish Church was built in the early 1840s beside the waterfall. The Church Accommodation Society undertook the project, with Viscount Dungannon providing the site, furnishings and churchyard enclosure. Its Gothic Revival design uses grey stone with sandstone dressings, lancet windows and a projecting entrance porch. The official building survey records renovation in 1979–80 and notes the survival of much of the church’s original fabric and arrangement. [3]

A long attraction for visitors

Glenoe’s waterfall drew visitors well before modern paths were laid out. Hearth’s account cites an 1845 traveller describing a difficult descent, stepping stones and trees crowding the enclosed glen. Later postcards depicted the village’s whitewashed, thatched cottages. The waterfall is now in National Trust care, only a short distance from Main Street, with paths and steps following the steep sides of the small wooded valley. [2] [4]
