Place & story
A deliberately old-looking castle
Glenstal Castle was built for the Barrington family in the 1830s. Architect William Bardwell designed it in the Norman Revival style. The school’s history records his playful inscription on a turret: the date 1839 was cut to resemble 1139, giving a modern building the appearance of greater antiquity. The University of Galway’s Landed Estates database identifies its townland as Garranbane in Abington parish. [2] [3]
Monastery and classrooms
Monks from Maredsous Abbey in Belgium established formal monastic life at Glenstal on 18 December 1927. They opened a small arts-and-crafts school in 1928. A boys’ secondary school followed in September 1932, beginning with seven pupils under Fr Columba Skerret. The school later expanded beyond the original castle. [2]
