Place & story
The schoolhouse dated 1862
Lauragh National School carries an 1862 date plaque. The architectural survey describes a single-storey building with a central gabled porch, stone window dressings and a retaining wall beside the road. An extension was added at the rear in 1998. Its carved name-and-date stone links the school’s later development with the original building. [2]
Creating the garden at Derreen
Derreen’s own garden history records Lord Lansdowne beginning a major planting project in 1870. Woodland shelter was created around a collection of specimen trees and shrubs obtained through plant-hunting expeditions. Some rhododendrons planted during the 1870s became especially large specimens. Paths through bamboo, tree ferns, eucalyptus and conifers reflect this long-established collection within the coastal landscape near Lauragh. [3]
