Place & story

The Sacred Heart church

The Archdiocese of Dublin dates Moneystown’s first church to 1911. Its replacement, dedicated to the Sacred Heart, was opened by Archbishop John Charles McQuaid on 8 June 1969. The later constitution of Roundwood parish in 1974 is a separate event in the area’s church history. These dates distinguish the present building from its predecessor and from the administrative parish that serves it. [2]

Snow in the diocesan correspondence

Two letters preserved in Dublin Diocesan Archives record how snow disrupted worship in Moneystown. The catalogue identifies correspondence from Fathers John M. Costello and John Fahey to Archbishop McQuaid, dated between January 1941 and February 1958, and states that the weather prevented Mass being said locally. This small archival file documents the practical effects of winter conditions on the community’s religious life. [3]

Recipes for a school building fund

In 2006, food writer Caroline Hennessy reviewed Real Food for Real People, a cookbook produced by Moneystown National School’s parents’ committee to support its building fund. Families contributed recipes, while children’s drawings and photographs helped illustrate the book. It also included a school history by former principal Frank McGillick. Hennessy reported that the first printing sold out in about a month, requiring a reprint. [4]
