Place & story
The turnpike name
The name Pike of Rush Hall recalls a road toll rather than a military weapon. At a municipal council meeting reported in January 2024, Councillor James Kelly explained it through the turnpike gates used in the stagecoach era: a barrier was moved aside for vehicles once the appropriate toll had been paid. The discussion arose from a modern roadside problem, a request for clearer village entrance signs after redundant signs had been removed. [2]
Rushall school
Rushall National School occupies a building dating from 1881. Originally arranged with two classrooms, it gained an extension in 2013 containing another classroom, a staffroom and an office. Its school grounds include a garden and a playing pitch as well as a basketball court. The school’s own account places it in the Pike of Rushall, about five kilometres from Castletown, linking a nineteenth-century village institution with later investment in its facilities. [3]
A renewed dedication
In September 2017 the Catholic church celebrated its bicentenary with a rededication to Naomh Garadh, an early Christian saint associated with nearby Cashel. A font from the historic Cashel hermitage was donated and blessed for display in the church grounds. The ceremony also recognised Una Kealey’s thirty-two years leading the choir with a Bene Merente medal, joining the commemoration of an older religious site to service in the present parish. [4]
