Place & story

The castle’s defences

Portora Castle guarded a river crossing near Lough Erne. Its house stood within a defensive enclosure with four circular towers. The two tall surviving towers formed part of the house, with gun-loops in their walls; traces of fireplaces also remain. [2]

A new school project

Enniskillen Royal Grammar School records planning approval for its redevelopment in March 2025 and the move from the Lough Shore site to Algeo Drive that October. Its plans incorporate the listed Portora House into the new school. These are project milestones rather than a completed-building date. [3]
