Place & story

Stella’s Castle

The fifteenth-century tower house known as Stella’s Castle once belonged to a wider group of agricultural buildings. A 1541 inquisition records a threshing house, hemp yard and haggard; later surveys describe further farm buildings and a garden. Its literary name recalls Esther Johnston, Jonathan Swift’s friend Stella, who lived there in 1712. Brick additions at the top show later alteration of the medieval structure. Fingal County Council conserved the tower in 2021, retaining a landmark also known locally as Bob’s Castle. [2]

People & connections

Sophia Evans’s memorial tower

After George Evans of Portrane House died in 1842, his widow Sophia commissioned a round-tower memorial designed by architect George Millar. The monument originally contained a marble bust by Christopher Moore. Its deliberately ancient-looking form belongs to the nineteenth-century revival of interest in Irish architecture. Sophia and George also supported Catholic emancipation and established schools in nearby Donabate. Both were buried at St Catherine’s Church in Portrane, linking the conspicuous memorial with the family’s local burial place. [3]

St Ita’s hospital complex

The extensive hospital buildings at St Ita’s were designed by George Coppinger Ashlin around the turn of the twentieth century. Red-brick ranges of different heights, projecting central blocks, canted bays and flanking towers gave the institution a strongly articulated outline. Sandstone dressings and decorative brick courses relieved the long elevations, while a chapel stood within the grounds. This large purpose-built complex brought a new institutional scale to the former demesne and remains a major element of Portrane’s architectural history. [4]
