Place & story
New homes and farms
Between 1935 and 1937, families moved from congested districts of Connemara to farms near Athboy under a scheme involving Muintir na Gaeltachta and the Land Commission. Údarás na Gaeltachta’s account records a new house, twenty-two acres, livestock and tools for each household. A national school was initially their only shared facility; official Gaeltacht recognition followed in 1967. [2]
Remembering the first arrivals
In April 2025 the community marked ninety years since the first arrivals on 12 April 1935. Matt Nolan’s report in the Meath Chronicle describes descendants gathering outside Tigh Catháin, where the first buses had stopped. Music, family recollections and an address of welcome formed part of the anniversary, linking later generations with the original migrants. [3]
