Place & story

A tower overlooking Cashla Bay

Rossaveal’s Martello tower belongs to the coastal defences built against the threat of invasion from Napoleonic France. Its limestone walls rise from a rubble-stone base, narrowing towards the top, while the entrance stands well above ground level. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage dates it to about 1804. Its position overlooking Cashla Bay made the shoreline a place of military observation as well as maritime work. [2]

The fishermen’s co-operative

The Galway and Aran Fishermen’s Co-operative began at Galway Harbour in 1974. It moved its operations to Rossaveal in 1979, with its operational and administrative facilities established there by 1982. The society marketed members’ catches through auctions and contracts, and bought supplies collectively for their boats. These arrangements connected the harbour’s fishing activity with an organisation handling both the sale of fish and the practical costs of going to sea. [3]

A new harbour building

On 13 June 2025 Timmy Dooley officially opened the Small Craft Harbour Building at Ros an Mhíl Fishery Harbour Centre. The department presented the building as a meeting point for fishers, boaters and visitors, funded through its harbour and coastal infrastructure programme. Its opening added a shared facility to a harbour whose working community includes fishing crews and seafood processors. [4]
