Place & story
The tradition of the barn
Saul is closely associated with the tradition that Patrick received a barn from the local chieftain Dichu after landing near the mouth of the Slaney. The Diocese of Down and Dromore preserves this account in its description of the church site. The story makes a modest agricultural building the starting point of Patrick’s mission. It remains central to the place’s religious identity, while belonging to the saint’s traditional life rather than to a surviving fifth-century building. [2]
The memorial church of 1933
The present Church of Ireland building replaced a simpler church erected in 1788. Designed by Henry Seaver and built by Cairns Brothers, the new church had its foundation stone laid on Ascension Day 1933 and was dedicated on All Saints’ Day that year. It commemorated the fifteen-hundredth anniversary of Patrick’s traditional arrival. The Dictionary of Irish Architects also records an earlier proposal by Alfred W. Brown, whose design was not chosen. The church is a modern memorial at an older religious site. [2] [3]
The hilltop memorial
Slieve Patrick rises between Saul and Raholp. Formerly known as Slieve William, the hill was renamed when Bishop Daniel Mageean blessed the site of the Patrick memorial. The parish history records the monument’s unveiling on 12 June 1938, with Cardinal MacRory blessing it before a large gathering. An annual pilgrimage subsequently developed around the hill. The monument and its associated gatherings extended Saul’s commemorative landscape beyond the churchyard into the surrounding countryside. [4]
