Place & story
Old Bawn House
Archdeacon William Bulkeley built Old Bawn House in 1635. Its pointed gables, twelve chimneys and elaborate interiors distinguished it from the fortified residences common in the district. South Dublin Libraries records that its carved oak staircase and dated chimneypiece passed to the National Museum. After a long decline, the surviving house was demolished in 1976. [2]
Education for a growing suburb
Old Bawn Community School was founded in 1978 as Tallaght’s population expanded. Its own history identifies the Dominican Fathers and Sisters as founders and describes community service as central to its work. From 1982, non-uniform days gave pupils a means of raising money for local charities. [3]
