Place & story
O’Connell’s gathering
Daniel O’Connell addressed a large public rally at Shantalla on 25 June 1843, on land made available by Thomas Bodkin. Tom Kenny’s local history identifies the speaking site as Emancipation Rock, later familiar to children as the Sliding Rock. Rahoon Road linked the then lightly developed area with Galway’s fairs and markets. [2]
Shantallow House and Scoil Bhríde
The Presentation Sisters bought Shantallow House and its grounds in 1950. A new national school, Scoil Bhríde, opened on the grounds on 27 July 1955 with six classrooms. The sisters lived in the house until moving to a new convent in March 1958. The older house and its outbuildings were subsequently demolished. [3]
