Place & story

Opening a new kind of centre

Seán Lemass opened Stillorgan’s shopping centre on 1 December 1966. Crampton built it for developer MEPC, with architect John Costello drawing inspiration from visits to America. Its open-air malls and covered walkways offered a new arrangement for local shopping, combining shops in a single planned complex. [2]

A later transformation

Renovations in 2018 changed the centre’s façades and canopies, repaved the malls and altered the car-park layout. The works also included an extension and a redesigned first-floor mall named the Orpen Mall, adding another phase to the centre’s development. [2]
