Place & story

Fairs and the lakeside estate

Samuel Lewis recorded fairs at Templehouse in 1837, placing it within the trading life of Kilvarnet parish. His account identifies Colonel A. Perceval’s residence beside the lake as one of the parish’s principal houses. He also describes the remains of an older religious establishment on the shore. The combination of trading gatherings, a country residence and earlier ruins was therefore already part of the locality’s recorded character in the nineteenth century. [2]

An enlarged country house

The nearby Temple House mansion was built about 1820 and substantially enlarged around 1864. Its limestone frontage has a central pediment and a projecting covered carriage entrance. Slate roofs sit behind balustraded parapets, while the grounds extend towards the lake. The architectural inventory also records the remains of a seventeenth-century house attached to a medieval castle, preserving evidence of earlier residences within the same demesne. [3]

The stable courtyard

A separate stable complex, dated to about 1870, reflects the working requirements of the estate. Two-storey stone ranges surround a courtyard, with a carriage arch and clock tower marking the centre of the north range. The tower has a copper-covered curved roof. Carefully dressed limestone walls, sash windows and projecting gabled bays give these service buildings a formal architectural treatment beyond their practical role in housing horses and equipment.
