Place & story

Successive places of worship

The parish’s account places an earlier medieval Saint Patrick’s church beside Lough Allen in Curraghs, where substantial ruins and an adjoining cemetery survive. A chapel built in Corglass in 1835 replaced an older building known as the Bog Chapel. The present Saint Patrick’s Church at Tarmon dates to 1904, with major renovations in 1973 and sanctuary work in 2011. [2]

A rural school under pressure

Saint Patrick’s National School had served Tarmon since 1958 when falling enrolment prompted a community campaign in 2018. Principal Fiona Reynolds explained that the school faced losing a teacher and potentially closing. The Tarmon Matters group encouraged families to settle locally, promoted available housing and contacted people interested in moving to rural Leitrim. Their response linked the school’s future directly to the community’s population. [3]

Learning beyond the classroom

The 2018 campaign also drew attention to the school’s cultural and sporting activities, including music tuition, GAA coaching and visiting artists. Designer Úna Burke, from Cootehall, worked with pupils on leather craft during the campaign. Her visit provides a specific local association: she supported the school through a practical workshop and spoke publicly about the value of education in a rural setting. [3]
