Place & story

Saint Mary’s in 1893

Saint Mary’s Church was built in 1893, when Father James O’Reilly was parish priest and Father Patrick Finegan served as curate. Finegan later became Bishop of Kilmore. Bishop Edward McGennis dedicated the new church on 28 May that year. The parish’s account distinguishes this foundation from the separate history of Saint Ninnidh’s at Derrylin, the other church serving the wider Knockninny parish. [2]

An early run of county titles

Teemore Shamrocks appears at the beginning of Fermanagh GAA’s senior football championship roll, winning the titles of 1904, 1905 and 1906. Another sustained run followed from 1910 through 1917. Later wins included 1969, 1971, 1974, 1975, 1983 and 2005. The official results record therefore places the club across many generations of county competition, rather than associating its reputation with a single successful team or short period. [3]

How the playing ground changed

A Cooperation Ireland study recorded how the club financed a move to larger grounds by selling an earlier site for its gravel reserves. The agreement combined a cash payment with preparation of the new playing area. A fundraising draw then helped pay for clubrooms, storage, fencing and floodlighting. The study also recorded the club’s assistance with an all-weather playing surface at the local primary school. These practical arrangements show community sport developing through land agreements, voluntary fundraising and shared facilities. [4]
