Place & story
The fair on the common
Turloughmore’s livestock fair occupied a fifty-seven-acre common and became a major event in the local farming calendar. Lackagh Museum records buyers arriving from counties including Meath, Westmeath, Offaly and Kilkenny. Local drovers earned work by walking purchased cattle to Athenry railway station for onward transport. Twice-yearly gatherings brought trade and sociability together, before the rise of livestock marts gradually weakened the older fair system.[2]
The deaths remembered in a ballad
A disturbance at the fair in 1843 ended with police shooting three men named Greally, Callaghan and Mullen. Lackagh Museum preserves the memory of the incident through an inquest record and a ballad about the deaths and subsequent proceedings. The commanding magistrate, Brew, died before his trial. The song became one means through which the violent episode remained part of Turloughmore’s remembered history.[2]
People & connections
Patrick Murray and the early GAA
Patrick Murray helped establish organised Gaelic games in the parish through a National League meeting in May 1886. He later served on Galway’s county board and represented the county on the GAA’s Central Council. Turloughmore’s Fair Green hosted county finals in 1896, while Murray supplied a playing field behind his public house and built a ball alley beside it. The club’s history remembers his contribution to both playing space and sporting organisation.[3]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
