Place & story
A school from 1880
The first school in Ellistrin opened in 1880 and initially had a single teacher. Toilets and a small hall were added during the 1940s. Its successor, Scoil Naomh Fiachra, uses the local spelling Illistrin and serves families in the surrounding district and the western part of Letterkenny. [2]
Growing with Letterkenny
In 1998 the school had 147 pupils and five teachers. Its own history links subsequent enrolment growth with Letterkenny’s expansion. An extension followed in 2004, and prefabricated classrooms were brought in as demand continued to outgrow the permanent accommodation. The changing buildings reflect the school’s move from a small rural institution to a much larger local service. [2]
