Place & story
Saint Matthew’s anniversary
Saint Matthew’s Church, Aughadown, was consecrated on 13 August 1873. Exactly 150 years later, a commemorative service brought together a large congregation to mark that history. Skibbereen and District Historical Society recorded the contribution of Deirdre Pemberton, whose great-grandfather John and his brother Thomas built the church. Her research for the society’s journal linked the building’s story with that of the family who constructed it. [2]
The beginnings of ladies’ football
The opening of Ilen Rovers’ Church Cross pitch in 1982 helped create an opportunity for women’s football. Deirdre Minihane took her children there for informal games, and in 1983 she and her sister Ailish proposed a girls’ team. The club supported the idea. An account based on Margaret Coombes’s recollections describes players coming from the surrounding parishes and farther afield, followed by a county junior championship victory in 1984. [3]
A pitch in Donie Duggan’s memory
In February 2026 Ilen Rovers opened a new floodlit training pitch at Church Cross, naming it for former player and coach Donie Duggan. Club chairman Jason Whooley credited Duggan with pursuing the lighting proposal before his death in 2023. The new facility joined another Church Cross pitch and a walkway, allowing winter training while reducing wear on the club’s other playing surfaces, including its main ground at Rath. [4]
