Place & story
School and meeting place
Glenmaquin National School dates its foundation to 1865. Its own history credits the landlord, Sir G. Hill, with helping build it on a site supplied by James Clarke. The building also served as a community hall. The school marked its 150th anniversary in 2015 and received President Michael D. Higgins in 2016. [2]
Water arrives in 2007
An RTÉ report broadcast on 26 April 2007 recorded Glenmaquin’s celebration after a long campaign for water. The ceremonial turning-on took place at the school, previously dependent on a well that often ran dry. Pupils and teachers had brought bottled water for drinking and washing. The new supply served the wider community as well as the school. [3]
