Place & story
A school built with local help
Herbertstown’s school history records a two-storey school built in 1853 for £200, with parishioners contributing voluntary labour. Boys occupied the ground floor and girls the upper storey. The school entered the National Board system in 1858. A replacement opened in 1943, and a later extension was celebrated at an opening night in October 2011. [2]
The Sacred Heart Church
The Sacred Heart Church forms a focal point in Herbertstown. Its cruciform plan includes a four-bay nave and transept porches, with an open bellcote above the entrance. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage highlights its Gothic Revival detail, stained glass and limestone tracery. Inside, a carved marble altar and a timber gallery contribute to the building’s character. [3]
