Place & story
George Hill’s home
The historian George Hill was born at Moyarget on 18 September 1810 and died in the same house on 4 July 1900. His career took him away from the family farm: he served as librarian of Queen’s College, Belfast, from 1850 until 1880. His Historical Account of the Macdonnells of Antrim appeared in 1873. The Glens of Antrim Historical Society later described the old farmhouse surviving as an agricultural building beside its replacement. [2]
Moyarget Lodge house
Moyarget Lodge, the country house, developed around a farmyard occupied before the present residence was built. A Historic Environment Division investigation places the new house between 1855 and 1859, during John Stewart-Moore’s ownership. Its three-bay front, hipped slate roof and two-storey returns form a substantial addition east of the older yard. The 1859 valuation recorded both the new residence and the earlier house; a gate lodge stood at the entrance from Moyarget Road. [3]
The Masonic hall
Moyarget Masonic Lodge No. 280 received its warrant on 1 March 1821. Its replacement hall, built for £2,868, was dedicated on 30 September 1961. The Provincial Grand Lodge of Antrim records objects transferred from earlier premises, including a painted pine ballot box and an engraved Waterford goblet dating from the 1840s. Stones from the old hall were incorporated inside the new building, alongside the silver trowel used for the 1961 foundation ceremony. [4]
