Place & story
Opening and wartime relocation
Stranmillis College opened in October 1922 to train primary-school teachers. Its main building officially opened in 1930. During the Second World War the campus became a military hospital, and teaching moved to Portrush from 1939 until May 1944. The college’s own timeline records the disruption and its return to Belfast. [2]
An expanding campus
The Henry Garrett building opened in 1944 to a design by Rippingham; wartime shortages led to construction without wood. A refectory and six halls of residence followed in 1966, the halls representing Northern Ireland’s six counties. The campus was designated an area of special architectural or historic interest in 1991. [2]
