Place & story
The creamery in 1920
The Irish Bulletin’s July 1920 reports describe British troops burning Garryspillane Co-operative Creamery after an attack on Crowley’s premises in Ballylanders on 25 July. This contemporary republican account links the local dairy business to the destruction of civilian property during the War of Independence. [2]
Butter and the co-operative store
Garryspillane Co-operative Dairy Society appears among the entrants in the creamery butter class of the Munster Agricultural Society’s 1938 summer show catalogue. The district’s agricultural trading role continues through Dairygold’s Garryspillane store, whose own listing identifies an agricultural counter and petrol pump. The later records show continuing dairy and farming activity, without establishing how the earlier creamery was rebuilt or reorganised. [3] [4]
