Place & story
Orchardstown House
Orchardstown House stands off Washington Lane near Butterfield Avenue. The architectural inventory dates it to about 1800 and records a two-storey building with several bays. Its rendered walls, timber sash windows and later casements show changes to the fabric. One of its two timber doors has a simple radial fanlight, a surviving detail of the house’s older architectural character. [2]
A nineteenth-century institution
The local history Rathfarnham Roads records a different use for Orchardstown House between 1858 and 1892. During those years the Stanley family supervised a private asylum there. The account identifies the house as reached by a side road, distinguishing it from the buildings directly on Butterfield Avenue. This institutional period forms a separate chapter after the house’s original construction. [3]
Neighbouring Washington House
Rathfarnham Roads discusses Orchardstown alongside nearby Washington House, also formerly called Washington Lodge and Oulart House. It records occupation by the Grimwood family from the mid-nineteenth century until 1916. Washington House is one of several local buildings claimed as Robert Emmet’s residence. That disputed association belongs to the neighbouring house; the account does not establish Emmet as an Orchardstown House resident. [3]
