Place & story

The bridge that gave the district its name

Rialto’s name came from the bridge over the Grand Canal’s former main line to James’s Street Harbour. Originally called Harcourt Bridge, it acquired a comparison with Venice’s Rialto Bridge; city historian Catherine Scuffil dates the local Rialto name to 1795. The crossing was rebuilt and widened in 1939. When the canal branch was later filled, the bridge survived, and further alterations accompanied the Red Line Luas in 2004. The tram now passes beneath this reminder of the waterway. [2]

Homes for brewery workers

Rialto Court, Rialto Street and Rialto Cottages formed part of a housing initiative associated with the Guinness brewery. Dublin City Libraries records that Edward Cecil Guinness asked the Dublin Artisans Dwelling Company to begin building homes for brewery workers in the early 1880s. The estate gives the district a direct connection with an employer’s influence on the provision of workers’ housing in nineteenth-century Dublin. [3]

The Rialto cinema

The Rialto cinema opened on South Circular Road in 1936, with an Art Deco frontage designed by F. J. Macaulay. Its stepped parapet and central name-and-date panel gave a distinctive public face to the large auditorium behind. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records its later conversion to a car showroom after the cinema closed in 1970. Its changing use reflects the loss of a substantial suburban entertainment venue and the reuse of its prominent roadside building. [4]
