Place & story

A memorial recorded by local volunteers

During an October 2011 workshop in Kill graveyard, about twenty people helped record its memorials through photographs, location records and inscription surveys. The team examined a stone erected by Philip Olwill in 1768. Its reverse carries a skull and crossbones above a coffin, with an hourglass and bell alongside. The firsthand account describes how low sunlight revealed faint carving and helped the volunteers read details that were harder to see earlier in the morning. [2]

Saint Mark’s Church

Saint Mark’s Church was built in 1855 to Joseph Welland’s design, replacing an earlier church in a separate graveyard to the south-west. Its limestone walls, projecting entrance porch, chancel and vestry give the building a carefully articulated outline. The architectural survey particularly notes its sloping lower walls and the bell-ringer’s chamber at the west end. A triplet of stained-glass windows lights the east end. [3]
