Place & story

The house at Northlands

Architectural historian Nicholas Kingsley’s account of the Adams family dates Northlands house to 1822 and attributes its construction to the Rev. Samuel Adams, later Dean of Cashel. He describes a modest Georgian house with two storeys, three bays and a projecting porch. The house was subsequently demolished; his account records surviving outbuildings and traces of the surrounding planting. [2]

People & connections

A magistrate’s report

A National Archives catalogue entry identifies the Rev. Adams as a magistrate living at Northlands in July 1825. His letter reported an Orange procession approaching Shercock from Bailieborough and his efforts, with another magistrate, to prevent its entry. This is Adams’s account to the government, rather than an independently established description of every participant’s actions. It connects Northlands with local administration during a politically tense period. [3]

Northlands National School

Cavan’s school archive catalogue records Northlands National School under roll number 4591. Surviving boys’ registers cover 1866–1889 and girls’ registers 1868–1888. Examination papers document the school’s participation in Payment by Results. The catalogue notes that it ceased to be interdenominational by 1890, and records a changed roll number, 15201, in the statistical return for 1898. [4]
