Place & story
Lady Gordon’s lakeside house
Lady Edith Gordon bought the site of Ard na Sidhe beside Caragh Lake in 1913 and began building a house using a Killorglin contractor and local workers. The hotel’s history describes Irish building materials apart from imported Westmorland roof slates. Its low, gabled form and stone-mullioned windows reflect an Arts and Crafts approach to a country house set within the lakeside landscape. [2]
Gardens and a new use
Gordon planted trees and developed the gardens, with some of her planting surviving in the rock garden. Dr Liebherr acquired the estate in 1958, and it began receiving guests in 1960. Later planting introduced trees and shrubs from Hillier Nurseries, while restoration by Howley Hayes architects continued the building’s life as a country-house hotel. The estate’s history therefore combines private garden-making with the development of lakeside tourism. [2]
A survey beneath the surface
A fisheries survey in August 2008 recorded brown trout, perch, eels and Arctic char in Lough Caragh. Only six char were caught, and no young-of-the-year char appeared in the sample. The researchers recommended close monitoring because of the small catch and possible pressures on the population. Their report gives a dated ecological snapshot of a lake better known publicly for salmon angling, rather than a count of all fish living there. [3]
