Place & story

A twentieth-century church

Currow’s Church of the Immaculate Conception was designed by Patrick J. Sheahan. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records a 1957 date and describes a neo-Byzantine building with a copper roof, rounded openings and a tall recessed entrance. Inside, a central vaulted ceiling compartment and a gallery accompany marble fittings around the sanctuary. [2]

A community park project

Mick Galwey returned to his native Currow to open the Killeentierna Wildlife Park on 15 December 2000. Photographer John Reidy’s retrospective account describes a community project planned from 1996, responding to a lake that had become severely overgrown and shallow. The site lay in the presbytery grounds east of the village, and the opening brought together the development group and local residents. [3]
