Place & story
The village at the river crossing
Samuel Lewis recorded sixty-one inhabitants in Greenan in 1837. His description places the village on the Avonbeg, beside a bridge serving routes towards Glenmalure and the Meeting of the Waters. It contained a Catholic chapel for the Rathdrum district and a school maintained by W. Kemmis. This account identifies the crossing, worship and education as the principal features of a very small settlement before the later development of its visitor attractions. [2]
Jonathan and Will Wheeler’s museum project
Jonathan and Phoebe Wheeler bought a fifty-acre farm at Ballinanty in 1984. Their son Will's collection of antique bottles and farming implements grew with Jonathan's help into a museum. Jonathan also planted a hedge maze in 1988; the farm opened to the public by 1996. The family's account describes diversification from farming through collecting, planting and interpretation, giving the attraction a specific origin in the work of two generations. [3]
The objects of ordinary rural work
The Barn Museum displays horse-drawn ploughs, carts and traps alongside tools associated with blacksmiths, coopers and thatchers. The Bottle Museum, established in 1985, brings together nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Irish bottles and jars, including objects recovered on the farm. These collections preserve the materials of agricultural work, craft and domestic consumption. Their interest lies in everyday objects that could easily have been discarded, rather than a collection restricted to celebrated people or major events. [4]
