Place & story
A landscape shaped by ice and water
The Geological Survey’s 1908 memoir described conspicuous gravel mounds at The Cross, spreading north and north-west. Its authors interpreted them as deposits left by prolonged meltwater discharge while ice still occupied the Faughan valley farther upstream. They also recorded tributary streams cutting through sand deposits up to 50 feet thick. A plan accompanying the account mapped these hills and channels, preserving an early scientific reading of the local landscape. [2]
