Place & story
From shopping blocks to a cleared site
The Meenan Square project team records that the shops formed two blocks within the surrounding residential area. The Northern Ireland Housing Executive sold the complex to a private investor in 2002. The buildings were cleared in 2022 to make way for redevelopment. The site lies between Meenan Square, Durrow Park, Lecky Road and Westland Street. [2]
The consultation proposals envisaged a shared community hub, exhibition space, meeting and training rooms, youth facilities and a civic square. The Executive Office’s Urban Villages Initiative worked with Apex Housing Association and Meenan Square Developments Ltd on the project. These plans sought to renew a place that had long served as a social meeting point for the Bogside and neighbouring communities. [2]
