Place & story

A telephone at the rural post office

May's Corner appears in a parliamentary return presented on 3 July 1930. Responding to Major Ross, Postmaster General Hastings Lees-Smith listed rural post offices and railway stations supplied with telephones between 1 April 1929 and 31 May 1930. Mays Corner was included among the post offices, alongside Annaclone and other rural communities. The return places the local office within this expansion of communications, although it gives neither the installation day nor the date when postal services first began here. [2]

Remaking the crossroads

TransportNI's 2015 report identifies May's Corner as the junction of the B 10 Rathfriland Road and Fernhill Road. It records completed work to alter the junction's alignment and improve visibility. The carriageway was widened to accommodate central road markings and a right-turn pocket on the B 10. The report also acknowledged the cooperation of affected landowners, documenting a change to the junction's physical layout rather than simply a proposal for future work. [3]

A climb on the Annaclone circuit

May's Corner also featured in Banbridge Cycling Club's opening road race of the 2019 season. Twenty-eight riders competed over three laps of the Annaclone circuit, returning through Katesbridge. The report describes the climb at May's Corner as a decisive point on the final lap, where Johnny McRoberts, Mark Kendal and Charlie Glover pulled away. They finished in that order, with Kendal the first Banbridge rider home on his road-race debut. [4]
