Place & story

Sisters living in the estate

In the 1990s, Mercy Sisters Brigid Quinn and M. Louis Donaghy moved into the Model Farm estate to work in the parish. The congregation's own history places this mission in the context of families moving to Downpatrick from Belfast during the Troubles. Other sisters continued the work as personnel became available. [2]

Community self-build housing

Model Farm later hosted a housing project involving Habitat for Humanity and the Northern Ireland Co-Ownership Housing Association. In the Assembly on 12 November 2007, Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie described visiting the project twice that year. She cited it as an example of partnership in providing community self-build homes for lower-income households. [3]
