Place & story
An older house inside a Victorian exterior
Rubane House, also known as Echlinville, was substantially rebuilt in the mid-nineteenth century. Its Italianate exterior incorporates fabric from an eighteenth-century house, itself probably containing an earlier dwelling. A former library survives beside the main block, with Ionic pilasters framing round-headed windows and ornamental Coade-stone details. The official building survey therefore describes a house assembled through successive alterations, with an older wing retained alongside the larger Victorian residence. [2]
The boys’ home and its legacy
The De La Salle Brothers purchased the property in 1950 and operated a boys’ home and school there until 1985. Its subsequent history includes the investigation of institutional abuse. During the Commons debate on redress legislation in November 2019, Northern Ireland Secretary Julian Smith described the Hart inquiry’s finding that boys had suffered sexual abuse throughout the home’s operation. Recognition of that suffering forms an essential part of Rubane’s twentieth-century history. [2] [3]
Distilling on the estate
The estate later became the setting for Echlinville Distillery, which received its distilling licence and filled its first spirit casks in 2013. Its production connects agricultural work with processing: barley is grown and harvested on the farm, then malted, distilled and bottled through the business. A 2023 financing announcement records its purchase of the separate Ards Maltings building, intended to expand traditional malting capacity beyond the existing farm operation. [4]
